Understanding the fineness of grind gage is essential for monitoring and optimizing milling or dispersing operations. This vital instrument helps in preventing costly over-grinding by accurately measuring the presence of coarse particles in various substances.
A grind gage stands out as a user-friendly and affordable tool, designed specifically for production and quality control purposes. It enables manufacturers and users to efficiently identify unwanted agglomerates or oversized particles, ensuring consistent product quality.
Operational Instructions for Grind Gage
To effectively use the grind gage, start by distributing the material uniformly. Use a straight-edged scraper to move from the deep end to the shallow end of the gauge. Any particles or agglomerates that are too large to pass through the gauge path will appear as “scratches,” “points,” or “speckles.”
The process is quick and easy, requiring minimal technical skill while providing precise numerical results. These results can be meticulously recorded and compared for consistent quality control throughout your production processes.
By integrating a fineness of grind gage into your routine checks, you enhance the accuracy and efficiency of your milling or dispersing operations, ultimately leading to better product performance and reduced waste.
Scale and Units of Measurement
Mils – One Mil is .001 inches.
Microns – Micron is usually rounded to .00004 inches for practical purposes. 25 Microns is equal to 1 Mil (.001 inches).
Hegman – The Hegman Scale is the most common scale used in the paint industry. At the 8 (eight) Hegman (H) calibration mark the depth of the path is .000” (0 Mils) or no depth and at the 0 (zero) Hegman (H) calibration mark the depth of the path is .004” (4 mils).
NPIRI Scale – Designed for ink gauges, The NPIRI scale begins at 0 (zero) and extends to 10 (ten). The depth at 10 NPIRI is .001” (1mil). The scale divisions are equal to one tenth of a mil or 2.5 microns.
